As the temperatures dip, it’s fun to plan an escape to some winter sun. And that’s what’s so great about living in Dubai – there are lots of cheap destinations that we can easily fly off to.

So we’re here to offer a little ‘destination inspiration’ with 5 winter holiday spots that won’t break the bank. So join us as we jet off around the world on Sarwa’s cheap travel destination guide.

Middle Eastern Adventure: Jordan

If you don’t want to fly far or spend too much, few Middle East destinations can beat Jordan for culture, history, rest and adventure.

Flying to Amman from Dubai is cheap. Once there, you’ll be welcomed into a historical, thriving city. Amman has great shopping and food, as well as some of the world’s best hotels that are great value too. Here, you can relax. But it’s beyond the capital where real adventure awaits.

A day trip to Petra, one of the world’s great ancient cities, is a must. Be sure to go early to beat the crowds. A little further into the desert you’ll find Wadi Rum, a desert jewel, famously where T. E. Lawrence began his Arabian desert journey. It’s worth staying for a night or two if you can.

Why Jordan? If you like history, there are few better places. And it’s right on Dubai’s doorstep.

European Culture: Italy

Cheap travel destinations don’t come more alluring than Italy. Ok, you won’t find much sun at this time of year but Italy has dry winters. Cool, crisp days spent wandering in an Italian city is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Fly to Rome, Milan or Venice and use Airbnb, cheap and popular in most Italian cities. Once you’ve found a great value apartment, explore the art, culture, architecture and wonderful food.

Our personal favourite is Venice, magical at any time of year. The Venice Festival in February and March is a wonderful time to experience the city in all its glory.

Why Italy? Because there is nowhere like Italy on earth.

North African Sun: Red Sea

If you really just want to kick back and relax, the Red Sea is the perfect place. It has fabulous, cheap hotels, adventurous activities and near-guaranteed sunshine.

You can fly inexpensively from Dubai to Cairo. Then head to the Red Sea to find luxury in one of the many high-quality hotels. There are few better places for diving, snorkelling and kite surfing.

If you can tear yourself away from your sun lounger, ancient Egypt is worth a trip. The Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings and the Nile are manageable in a day from most resorts.

Why the Red Sea? For relaxation, fun, sun and a little history, there are few places like it.

Island Living: Sri Lanka

Cheap and wonderful holiday destinations don’t come much more cheap and wonderful. And between December and March, south Asian weather is perfect for a holiday.

Get a great value flight from Dubai to Sri Lanka. Then either head inland to the hills for beautiful scenery and culture or south to the beaches and explore the stunning city of Galle. Sri Lanka is incredibly cheap, with culture, history and stunning beaches to explore.

Sri Lankan people are also welcoming, making you feel instantly at home. The extra distance to get there will be worth it, especially if you can stay for a week or two.

Why Sri Lanka? It will be like nowhere else you’ve been on earth. Fun. Beautiful. Welcoming

Ocean Paradise: Maldives

Ok, the Maldives aren’t that cheap. But booking some winter sun can be made cheaper by finding last-minute packages. And nowhere fits the bill for full-on chill out than the Maldives. And it’s only a couple of hours flight from Dubai.

Check out travel companies for their last-minute packages to give you some cheap options for all-inclusive deals. If you can be flexible with when you can travel, you should get a great deal.

For escaping the stresses of the world, the Maldives is exactly where you should go. If you’re flexible, it can also be really cheap.

Why the Maldives? Because why not?

There are few activities more fun than planning a winter escape. What’s more, if you hunt around for a deal and be flexible, you’ll be able to find some cheap destinations.

We’re so lucky to live in Dubai as, from here, you can access so many holiday spots that won’t break the bank. All of us Sarwa wish you a great trip. Don’t forget to send us a postcard!
